About

JC Sawyer

JC Sawyer Elementary School had over 15 runners come out for the 2007 Waterway5k Event. A Nintendo Wii Gaming System was given to the school for the most participants. Pictured above front row: Mr. Hill, Cameron Pharr, James Jenkins, Brett Jenkins, Ki'Shawn Moore, second row: Phil Donahue, Georgia Swayne, Letitia Moore, Gretchen James, and Kristy Poyner. We want to thank Julie Gregory, JC Sawyer PE teacher, for her enthusiasm of health and wellness and promoting the event.

JC Sawyer Elementary School received the $200 prize for having the most participants in the Waterway5k 2006 event. The money will be used for health and wellness.

The greatest risk factors for getting breast cancer are being a woman and aging. We all have a mother, sister, daughter, wife, or friend who has been affected by breast cancer. 97% of women who are diagnosed with breast cancer in the earliest stage survive the disease. Only 21% survive if the disease is diagnosed in the most advanced stage. (North Carolina Central Cancer Registry, April 2003)

All women aged 40 and over should get a mammogram and clinical breast exam every year. Women at particularly high risk should talk with their doctor about more frequent screening and starting screening earlier.

Goals

  • Raise funds so that anyone in the seven county service area needing a mammogram will not be denied due to financial reasons.
  • Increase awareness that early detection for breast cancer can save lives.
  • Get folks moving!

While breast cancer cannot be prevented, some studies suggest that physical activity, good nutrition and certain drugs may lower a woman's risk of getting the disease.
