The greatest risk factors for getting breast cancer are being a woman and aging. We all have a mother, sister, daughter, wife, or friend who has been affected by breast cancer. 97% of women who are diagnosed with breast cancer in the earliest stage survive the disease. Only 21% survive if the disease is diagnosed in the most advanced stage. (North Carolina Central Cancer Registry, April 2003)
All women aged 40 and over should get a mammogram and clinical breast exam every year. Women at particularly high risk should talk with their doctor about more frequent screening and starting screening earlier.
Goals
- Raise funds so that anyone in the seven county service area needing a mammogram will not be denied due to financial reasons.
- Increase awareness that early detection for breast cancer can save lives.
- Get folks moving!
While breast cancer cannot be prevented, some studies suggest that physical activity, good nutrition and certain drugs may lower a woman's risk of getting the disease.
